Philippines Marks 127th Independence Anniversary, Uniting Filipino Community in Toronto

Toronto, Canada — On 12 June 2025, the Philippine Trade and Investment Center  (PTIC) in Toronto of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supported the commemoration of the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence with back-to-back flag raising ceremonies at Toronto City Hall and the Ontario Legislative Assembly at Queen’s Park led by Philippine Consulate General in Toronto.

The event brought together the Filipino community, government officials, and key partners in a vibrant display of national pride and unity. For the first time, iconic Filipino brand Jollibee joined the festivities at City Hall, alongside Kuya Popoy of Pinoy Ontario Vendors.

Their participation reflected the growing visibility and contribution of Filipino owned enterprises in Canada and highlighted the strengthening collaboration between Filipino public and private sector stakeholders in Toronto.

The ceremonies featured heartfelt renditions of the Philippine and Canadian national anthems performed by the Consulate team, Chyrell Ronquillo, Danny Orbillo, and sopranos Lilac Cana and Jennifer Uy.

In her message, Consul General Angelica C. Escalona, who is concluding her tour of duty this month, expressed gratitude to the Filipino community and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage while making meaningful contributions to Canadian society. She also highlighted the deepening ties between the Philippines and Canada, including last year’s celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Behind the scenes, the PTIC-Toronto supported the collaboration through a series of meetings that opened the door for new partnerships, paving the way for Jollibee’s debut participation in the City Hall ceremony.

This year’s commemoration stood as a testament to the strength, unity, and resilience of the Filipino-Canadian community, as well as to the continued efforts of government offices and private partners in building lasting bridges across sectors and cultures. ♦
