Not all heroes wear capes. Some carry babies while presenting business plans.

Jona May Carandang is a hardworking mompreneur from Bay, Laguna. She began her entrepreneurial journey with just Php2,500 lent by her sister, selling skincare and beauty products while working as a barista. But deep down, her heart was always set on something else—food, coffee, and drinks.

Inspired by her daughter Janaya, Jona gave her latest business a name that felt close to home: JanaTayo Magkape Food and Refreshment Hub. What started as a home-based setup eventually grew into a small but thriving food hub near UP Rural High School. A dream that once fit in a corner of their house now serves students and locals who keep coming back for the flavors and the warmth.

In 2022, Jona joined the Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP!) of the Department of Trade and Industry – Laguna Provincial Office (DTI-Laguna). While presenting her business plan, she held her 2-year-old daughter in her arms—crying nonstop. It was chaotic, unplanned, and real. Many would have backed out, but Jona stood her ground. She presented anyway—and not only did she finish, she topped the batch, winning first place in the Business Plan Presentation for Bay, Laguna.

With the Php10,000 cash prize, she invested in basic equipment through the Orange App and began building the version of JanaTayo Magkape she had always envisioned. Bit by bit, her home kitchen transformed into a fully functioning food hub. She now creates her own dips, sauces, and flavors—taste-tested by family and friends who aren’t shy to give feedback. Each item on the menu has a story and a personal touch.

Through the help of DTI-Laguna—particularly the YEP! program—Jona was able to strengthen her entrepreneurial foundation. The targeted trainings and mentorship sessions gave her access to practical tools and business development resources she wouldn't have had otherwise.

However, the journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Her store was recently robbed. Despite this, she didn’t let it stop her. “Setbacks aren’t dead ends,” she says. “They’re detours with lessons.” Instead of giving up, she treated it as just another chapter in her journey.

With her husband’s full support, she continues to juggle parenting and business every single day. The shop remains modest in size, but its charm and heart are impossible to miss. Among her regulars are high school students, passersby, and curious newcomers—many of whom end up staying longer than planned.

“When you start a family, lahat gagawin mo para sumakses. Lalo na kung para sa anak mo,” she says, smiling. “Even with the messiness, crying child, no babysitter… you keep going.”

She encourages other aspiring entrepreneurs not to wait for the perfect time. Start now, she says. Celebrate every small win. Learn as you go.

Jona dreams of expanding to more locations someday. She hopes to mentor young parents and fellow mompreneurs—those who want to build something meaningful even when life feels too messy to begin with.

Success, for Jona, didn’t come in the form of overnight wealth or fame. It came in quiet victories: one customer returning for coffee, one new menu item that clicked, and one day survived—with a toddler on her hip and orders in the queue.

Maybe, that is the kind of success that truly matters.

Kaiser Roleen R. Mendoza, a graduate of Business Administration with a specialization in Entrepreneurial Management, always harboured a dream of reviving his family's legacy. Founded by his grandmother in 1977, 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo once delighted local palates with its unique and homemade ingredients. Sadly, the business shuttered its doors in 1988.

Unbowed by setbacks, Mendoza started on a series of entrepreneurial ventures. After a brief stint running a coffee shop from 2008 to 2012, he explored various avenues, including selling everyday essentials like napkins, soap, toothbrushes, and oil. He even tried selling online some boat propellers that reached up to Visayas and Mindanao. These experiences, though not always successful, provided valuable lessons in business and resilience.

While the idea of selling halo-halo might seem commonplace, Mendoza observed a significant gap in the market. Many halo-halo vendors lacked a strong online presence, and many physical stores suffered from limited parking space or were difficult to locate using online maps. He saw a problem that could be turned into an opportunity. With a strong will, he registered his business with the Department of Trade and Industry last 2022.

On January 9, 2023, Mendoza launched 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, offering pick-up and delivery services. With an initial capital of just P7,000.00, driven by the desire to honour his family’s heritage and share their beloved halo-halo recipe with a wider audience, Mendoza revived 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo, focusing on addressing these challenges. He leveraged online platforms to promote his business, ensuring easy discoverability and customer engagement. He also prioritized customer convenience by securing a location with ample parking space.

Drawing upon his grandmother's original recipe and incorporating his entrepreneurial knowledge, he meticulously crafted a menu featuring all-natural, homemade ingredients, including Crema Del Cielo. The response has been overwhelming. 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo has quickly gained a loyal following, captivating customers with its authentic flavors and commitment to quality.

And since he was very determined to be successful in his chosen venture, he joined Mr. Joey Concepcion’s 3M on Wheels at Robinson’s Galleria. This is when he first knew about Kapatid Mentor Me Program or KMME, and successfully graduated. He also joined the One Town One Product Program or OTOP from PCLEDO.

Recognizing the potential for growth, Mendoza is now exploring catering services opportunities since April 2023, aiming to expand the brand and share the unique taste of his family's halo-halo with the rest of the country.

Having in the business for quite some time now, the brand gained significant attraction, leading to features on local radio and the popular television show, "Good Morning Kapatid." Then in July 2024, 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo achieved a major milestone by registering as an IPO brand and securing trademark certificates for its official logo last October 2024. They even had Digmo, as their mascot! Mendoza's entrepreneurial spirit continued to drive the business forward as he participated in the BPI SEAL-SEGA 2024, a business pitching competition organized by the BPI Foundation, and placed as one of the Top 40 awardees!

Mendoza's journey serves as an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance, family legacy, and a deep-rooted passion for entrepreneurship. 3 Cousins Digman Halo-Halo is not just a business; it's a story of family, tradition, and the enduring appeal of a beloved Filipino dessert. And as what he truly believes from the very start up to this day:

A week of neglect can cause a year of repair” and “Take care of your brand today and your brand will take care of you in the future.” ♦

Magellan Kaong Farm Products Manufacturing is a testament to the power of tradition and love. Owned by Rhodora Espineli, also known as Rhoda from Magallanes, Cavite, the business is recognized by the Slow Food Community Cavite for its Kaong Vinegar. It upholds traditional production methods, preserving the natural and distinctive taste of kaong. Beyond vinegar, the business is expanding its range to include kaong-derived products like kaong sugar and syrup, reaching more people with its unique offerings.

Rhoda began her business journey in 2019 by reselling health drinks but had to pause due to the pandemic. In 2020, she experienced the devastating loss of her son, which led to severe stress and health problems, including bleeding for more than two years. To help her cope with her grief, her sibling gifted her two drums of vinegar in 2022. This gift marked the start of her kaong vinegar business. Initially, she used unmarked gin bottles for packaging and sold her product from home. Motivated by the need to support her other son, who has a disability, Rhoda persisted through these humble beginnings. Just a few months after launching, the Local Government Unit of Magallanes invited her to join the OPCDO’s product development program for parents of individuals with disabilities. OPCDO then referred her to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

With the help of DTI, Rhoda attended seminars on product development, packaging, and marketing, and even joined the OTOP program, transforming the vinegar from a simple homemade product into a market-ready brand. This support provided the confidence to compete in the market and gradually gain recognition.

The transformation was profound. Magellan Kaong Products gained a foothold in the market, participating in events like the World Food Expo (WOFEX) and various trade fairs. The vinegar’s unique, natural flavor caught the attention of chefs and customers, becoming a sought-after ingredient in local restaurants.

Despite these successes, the business continues to face challenges, particularly in acquiring the necessary equipment and processing space. Yet, the progress made has already begun to improve lives—especially for Rhoda, who sees this business not just as a livelihood but as a way to honor and sustain a rich Filipino tradition.

This journey is about more than business. It’s about a mother’s love and dedication to her child, a commitment to preserving culture, and a deep belief in the potential of local products. She won’t forget the words of Ms. Marissa Argente, the DTI IV-A Regional Director: “Whatever business you've started, just keep going because the right time for you will come. Magtiwala sa Panginoon at sa kakayahan binigay Niya sa atin. Always stay positive in the face of business challenges. If others can succeed, you can too.”

Magellan Kaong Products stands as a symbol of resilience and love, proving that with faith, determination, and the right support, even the humblest beginnings can lead to something truly extraordinary. ♦
