DTI enforcement team inspects and seals uncertified products in Palawan during a June 2025 operation targeting substandard goods in hardware and appliance stores.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has sealed P 3.5 million worth of alleged uncertified products in Palawan following a targeted enforcement campaign, reinforcing the government’s crackdown on substandard goods that pose risks to consumers.

In a four-day operation from June 16 to 19, the DTI’s regional enforcement team conducted inspections across 44 hardware, appliance, and motorcycle parts stores in Coron, Culion, and Busuanga.

The sweep resulted in the issuance of 19 notices of violation to firms found to be selling products that lacked BPS markings, including the PS mark and ICC sticker.  These markings certify that a product has met the quality and safety standards set by the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS).

According to the report from the DTI MIMAROPA Consumer Protection Division, the items sealed include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) accessories, such as regulators, rubber hoses, and non-refillable gas cartridges, which can cause fires if substandard.

Enforcers also recorded non-compliant motorcycle inner tubes, low carbon steel wires, and various electric appliances like kettles, stoves, irons, fans, and television sets. The report also detailed goods extended to extension cords, lighters, lead-acid storage batteries, self-ballasted LED lamps, sanitary ware units, ceramic tiles, and plywood sheets.

DTI MIMAROPA Regional Director Amormio CJS Benter emphasized that adherence to fair trade laws not only protects consumers but also helps establish standards of conduct for businesses and industry.

The businesses that received an NOV are mandated to submit a written explanation within 48 hours. Failure to respond will compel the department to file formal charges. ♦
